Potlatch and Salmon BBQ

This will be a longer blog because I didn't have the time to blog during our 33rd Annual Potlatch and Salmon Rally, but I have notes and pictures.

Everyone looks forward to this annual event because of the fun times and of course the big dinner of Alder Smoked BBQ Salmon.

and Thursday Aug 9th

We had the traditional luncheon with a fashion show.  This year, for something different the models (our members) shopped at Good Will and modeled their selections.  We were all amazed at what kind of outfits you could get for under $20.00 and several were less than $10.00. One person had a complete outfit of tie-dyed,
he was really cute especially with the beard and pony tail.  There were several that found cute PJ's and bath robe.  Unfortunately none of my pictures came out clear.  I am terrible at taking pictures when the subject is moving.

 I also worked in the kitchen mostly washing and also serving.

Later that day, or maybe it was the next day we had BBQ hamburgers with all the trimmings and entertainment down in the park

Later that evening  Paul Che oke ten Wagner entertained us with many stories along with wonderful drumming and the flute.  He is such a talented young man full of stories.

Saturday Aug 11th



Parade Day, anything goes; golf carts, walkers, dogs.  A sumertime parade just for fun.

It's so much fun to have a fun and silly day
Next the Salmon Dinner.  This is the 33rd annual Potlatch and Salmon Fest.  We have been waiting for the salmon dinner all week with great anticipation and mouth watering at just the thought of it.

The BBQ Pit before

First you start a good wood fire then spread that out and add the charcoal, 

then the most important item is to use green Alder wood to give it a good smoke and flavor

The salmon is fresh out of Westport, it is put on a grill and sliced and then a light amount of a secret sauce is spread on the salmon, then foil over the top and the grills are then carfully carried down a few steps and placed very carefully on the pit

And, now wait until the perfect time, this is quite an art, grilling for over 100 people

I had to take a quick peak at the tails, they sure look yummy/

Every year I say that it was the best salmon I have ever had, but this year I am sure, without a doubt that this really was the very best salmon,  Very moist and tender, I don't remember what else we had but I'm sure it was good too.


Well that's about it for this year's 33rd Annual Potlatch and Salmon BBQ., Sunday was a church service and brunch with left overs and then on Monday a group of us met to do a thorough clean up of kitchen and hall, again a lunch of more left overs.

Everyone had a fantastic time, and anxiously looking forward to next year.

LeMay, American Car Museum

Today we carpooled to the new LeMay Car Museum.  We have been to their car museum and to their house to see additional cars.  Up until now that was the only way to view hundreds of his cars.
Now there is a brand new museum, the LeMay, American Car Museum.  If you just sort of like old cars or if you are a fanatic about it this is the place for you.

There were also lots of cars from the 40's, 50's, 60's etc.  This museum is well worth the stop, it is right next to the Tacoma Dome.

Potlatch Airstream Rally

The temperature on Monday dropped down to about 74' relief that we really needed.

Today is the starting of an annual event:  Potlatch.  This is a tradition of Native Americans in the Washington area.  Potlatch means tribes all getting together and bring each other presents, play games, dance, drum, trade stories and items of importance and just have a great time.  And that's what the Airstreamers do every summer here in Lacey, Washington.

Today we carpooled up to Crystal Mountain Ski Resort and then road the gondola to the top of the mountain for lunch and spectacular views of Mt. Rainier.  My first visit to Crystal mountain.

One the way we stopped at the cute little town of Buckley which was settled in the Territory of Washington one year (or so) before Washington became a state.

Looking a little to the left of Mt Rainier you could see Mt Adams and also Mt St. Helen some how they didn't make it in the picture.  We are at 6,000 ft looking out from the restaurant's patio 

The longer we stayed the better the mountain was looking with less clouds

Heading back down the gondola stopped and I was able to stand up and take this picture out an open window.  It really shows how steep it is here.

We sure had a beautiful day and yesterday was 94', I think it was about 72' up at the mountain.

Some like it hot!

Just a quick little note and no pictures

The temperature soared up to a record breaking 94'.  Some like it hot but not me 94 is just too hot in the Olympia/Seattle area.  We tried to go for a drive just to have something to do but every time we got out of the car it seamed to be hotter. 

One good thing, we found diesel at Safeway for $3.74/gal.  This was quite a saving as the stations closer to our home was $4.09.  I guess the fuel prices are starting to go up again. I use Gas Buddy all the time and have saved quite a bit.  I usually start looking a day or two before we actually need the fuel that way I know ahead of time when I am running around doing errands as to where to fuel up.  Our tank is 80 gallons, the most we have ever put in was about 72 gallons.

I told you it was short, hardly worth the effort.

Summer Days at The Beach

July 27 - 29, 2012

Our Annual trip over to Pacific Beach FamCamp.  My sister and bil, Debbie and Gary from Auburn, California usually find their way up here almost every summer.  My other sister Elaine is from Snoqualmie, Washington.  We all met up at Pacific Beach, on the way we stopped at Hoaquim to pick up Oysters and Crab.  We already had plenty of wine (two boxes), good sourdough bread and white corn.  Wow!, do we we know how to have a great weekend or what?

The weekend turned out to be the best ever, good food, good weather, and a great family to share the delicious BBQ oysters and crab.  We also went for walks on the beach picking up many sand dollars and a couple of other shells.  I have a neighbor who has a bunch of various shells scattered around his garden area so when it got dark last night I added about 30 sand dollars, several clam shells  and one large shell that looked like a scallop shell.  I don't know if he will notice or not but it was fun for me.

We are camped at the top of this little hill, there is a real easy road to walk down.
