Not too much going on here so I thought I would share something that happened last summer while we were in Nisga'a Memoria Campground, just outside of the village of New Aiyanch
This was a very remote beautiful secluded campground, and no electric. No problem, we have a brand new Honda 2000i. We tested it at home in the driveway before we left home but now we were going to use it for necessities, morning coffee.
You will notice the truck is in front of the trailer but not hooked up.
In order to make our morning coffee Joe slid the "Bed Slide" out so he could reach the generator, and it started right up. The coffee was made and just as I poured a cup I looked out and saw smoke. A closer look and I could see the whole back end of the bed slide was all smoke. I yelled to Joe "Where is that smoke coming from?" He was out of the trailer in a flash. (Where is the fire extinguisher?) Now there were flames, I grabbed the fire extinguisher from inside the trailer and ran outside. By this time the flames were as tall as the roof of the camper shell. I pulled the pin and gave the extinguisher to Joe who was trying to pull things away from the flames. He aimed, sprayed and the fire was out. From smoke until the fire was out was about 90 seconds but what a scary moment.
I share this with you in hopes that it will prevent someone else from making a mistake like this. It was the exhaust heat that started the fire against a cardboard box. The other lesson: know where your fire extinguishers are, there should be several in case you can't get to one or two. Also, remember the extinguisher is made for a very small fire or to get you out to safety.

The box holding our "Two-Buck Chuck" was also burned but we saved the wine.
This is the cardboard box that was next to the generator. The box was for our "camp fire in a can"
Safe travels to all
Nancy & Joe
That was a close call. Thanks for the warning!
ReplyDeleteyikes... close call.
ReplyDeleteYup, very close. We carry four extinguishers. One permanently mounted by the door. The three others travel on the bed and are set up in the kitchen and bedroom at every stop. When you see smoke is no time to wonder where they are.
